High blood pressure or hypertension is a condition you may be unaware you have, but which can cause life-threatening health problems.
Blood pressure is the force of your blood pumping through the arteries. If you have high blood pressure, it means the force at which your blood is pumping is likely to cause damage to your heart and other organs. Consequences of untreated high blood pressure include:
The reason high blood pressure often goes unnoticed is that it doesn’t typically cause any symptoms, so you don’t know there’s anything wrong until your blood pressure is so high you experience a major health crisis. That’s why it’s so important to have your blood pressure regularly checked at David M. Mitzner, DO, Inc. regularly.
The cause of high blood pressure may be an underlying health condition or lifestyle factors, such as:
Advancing age also leads to a rise in blood pressure, and taking medications such as oral contraceptives could also be a factor.
Checking your blood pressure is very straightforward, and can be done in moments in Dr. Mitzner’s office. He wraps an inflatable band called a blood pressure cuff around your bicep, inflates the band, and takes two readings to show the pressure of blood in your veins when your heart beats (systolic), and in-between beats (diastolic).
The resulting two numbers give you your blood pressure reading, for example, 120 over 80, which would be at the upper limit of normal blood pressure. Raised blood pressure means it’s at a level that’s above normal but not yet high and would be between 121 and 140 systolic, or between 81 and 90 diastolic.
High blood pressure would be over 140 systolic or over 90 diastolic. If your blood pressure reaches 160 or above systolic, or 100 or above diastolic, that’s dangerously high.
If your lifestyle is the cause or contributing to your high blood pressure, the most effective way of treating it is to make changes. Dr. Mitzner can help by advising you how to make healthy, sustainable choices, providing weight loss information and nutrition counseling, and supporting you in quitting smoking and reducing alcohol consumption.
Treating the underlying cause of high blood pressure is also important, and you may require medication to help lower your blood pressure, at least in the early stages.
